Jewish culture of ex libris in the Netherlands

“Joodse exlibriscultuur in Nederland” (Jewish culture of ex libris in the Netherlands) is the name of the exhibition which takes place at the main library of the University of Groningen, Holland, until May 6, 2007.

This amazing exhibition is part of a very ambitious project named “Exlibris van Joden in Nederland” (Jewish ex libris in the Netherlands) promoted by Jan Aarts, a scholar affiliated to the Huizinga Institute at the University of Amsterdam, F.J. Hoogewoud, conservator at the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana and Chris Kooyman, a researcher of the University of Amsterdam who undertook an interesting social and demographic study about the Jewish presence in Holland.

The project started in 2002 and was aimed at the comprehension of several phenomena linked to a big collection of Jewish ex libris (the database increased year after year and now it reaches about 1400 exemplars), such as the analysis of social-cultural-historical background or the discovery of biographical information of the owners and the artists behind these works of art. As a matter of fact, the main purpose would be an exhaustive evaluation inherent in the Dutch panorama of Jewish ex libris.

“Joodse exlibriscultuur in Nederland” (Ex libris della cultura ebraica nei Paesi Bassi) è il nome della mostra che ha luogo presso la biblioteca centrale dell’Università di Groninga, Olanda, fino al 6 maggio 2007.

Questa straordinaria mostra fa parte di un ambizioso progetto denominato “Exlibris van Joden in Nederland” (Ex libris di ebrei in Olanda) curato da Jan Aarts, uno studioso dell’Istituto Huizinga dell’università di Amsterdam, F.J. Hoogewoud, responsabile presso la Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana e da Chris Kooyman, un ricercatore dell’università di Amsterdam che ha completato uno studio socio-demografico sulla presenza degli ebrei in Olanda.

Il progetto ha visto la luce nel 2002 con lo scopo di comprendere svariati aspetti legati a una grande collezione di ex libris ebraici (il database è cresciuto anno dopo anno e adesso raggiunge circa 1400 esemplari), come per esempio l’analisi del contesto storico, sociale e culturale o la scoperta di informazioni biografiche relative ai possessori e agli artisti che stanno dietro questi capolavori. Non a caso, infatti, lo scopo principale sarebbe quello di raggiungere una valutazione esaustiva di tutti gli ex libris ebraici presenti nel panorama olandese.
